Apolipoprotein B

About

The ApoB test measures the level of apolipoprotein B in your blood, a protein found in various lipoprotein particles. If you only have LDL-C and Triglycerides values, you can use this calculator to get an estimated value.

ApoB isn't just another protein; it's the key structural component of several key lipoproteins, including:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): Often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, LDL transports cholesterol to your body's tissues. Too much LDL can lead to fatty deposits in your arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL): VLDL delivers triglycerides (another type of fat) to your tissues. Elevated VLDL levels often accompany high triglycerides, another risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
  • Intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL): IDL is formed when VLDL loses triglycerides, further contributing to cholesterol transport.
  • Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)): Lp(a) is genetically determined and has a similar structure to LDL. High Lp(a) levels are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

By measuring your ApoB, we can gain insight into the total number of these potentially harmful lipoprotein particles circulating in your blood.

Interpreting Your ApoB Results:

  • Generally, lower ApoB levels are considered better, indicating a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Specific thresholds vary depending on various factors, including age, gender, and other health conditions.
  • Your doctor will interpret your ApoB results in conjunction with other health markers and your overall health history.
