Cholesterol HDL-C Ratio
About
Cholesterol has two main types:
- LDL ("bad" cholesterol): This type contributes to plaque buildup in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease and other health problems.
- HDL ("good" cholesterol): This type helps remove LDL cholesterol from your arteries, offering some protection against heart disease.
The Cholesterol/HDL ratio provides a single snapshot of your cholesterol profile:
- Generally, a lower ratio (below 4 for men, below 5 for women) is considered better, reflecting a more heart-healthy balance of cholesterol types.
- A higher ratio (above 5 for men, above 6.5 for women) may indicate an increased risk for heart disease and other health problems.
Interpreting your ratio:
- While the ratio offers valuable information, it's just one piece of the heart health picture.
- Your doctor will consider your ratio along with other factors like your risk factors, medical history, and overall health profile.
- Don't focus on the ratio alone: Aiming for optimal levels of both total and HDL cholesterol is key for heart health.
